Festival-Special: The Bechdel Test
Saturday, October 27th 2018 // Theater am Neunerplatz // 8.30 PM
Improvised stories exploring rich female characters // In English
Struck by how female characters often get a raw deal in stories, American cartoonist Alison Bechdel came up with her own requirement: stories need at least one scene where two women talk to each other about something other than a man. A remarkably low percentage of films and stories pass this Bechdel test, indicating how accustomed we are to seeing stories centred on men.
This show will break that mould. Together with an international cast of top-class performers, Lisa Rowland and Dave Dennison from BATS Improv in San Francisco will put complicated, multi-faceted women at the centre of stories. They will show the idiosyncrasies, contradictions, and depths of these characters that we too often only see as accessories in the worlds of men.
